I knew Prof Harjit Singh Gill before he became a legend. We were neighbours at Punjabi University, Patiala, where my mother Mrs Inderjit Kaur, was Vice-Chancellor, he was head of the Department of Linguistics and I was a student at Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. Prof Gill has taken on a difficult task of translating Guru Nanak’s compositions, and he has presented a modern, readable rendering in English. Here’s my review of his two-volumes, as well as a reincarnation of an earlier biography of Guru Nanak in free verse.

It is not often that you come across a good translation of a good book in Punjabi. The Tale of the Phoenix is one such volume. The author, Dalip Kaur Tiwana, is considered one of the best contemporary Punjabi novelists and Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh, the translator, is herself a product of the same milieu —Patiala and Punjabi University figured prominently …
