Raghu Rai’s Retrospective

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

The legendary photographer Ragu Rai spent over two hours explaining his photographs and talking about his life and works when I visited Delhi last month. I had gone 250 kilometres just to meet him and see his work; he had the National Gallery of Modern Art opened up just for me!

This is the first time that a National Gallery of Modern Art has marked the retrospective of a photographer. The title of the exhibition is A Journey of a Moment in Time: Raghu Rai and there are 185 photographs that have been exhibited to show the 40 years of this journey.

What a wonderful time I had—the depth of the man and his warmth, as well as Punjabi hospitality that did not allow my brother Ravinder and me to return without having a sumptuous lunch at the India International Centre, in New Delhi. When private becomes public in cyberspace

Monday, March 17th, 2008

We all know that what we post on the Internet is not private. We post it to share information with others. We all had no idea about who Ms Ashley Alexandra Dupre was, but now the lady who brought down the New York Governor, Mr Eliot Spitzer, is well-known because of the information that she posted on the social networking sites MySpace and Facebook. Surjit Singh Barnala’s book

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

A sweet book by a sweet person who is also a politician. Sounds too good to be true? You must realise that there are Governors and then, there are Governors.

Internationally, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of New York, is hogging headlines because his life did not quite turn out to be an open book, and certain chapters in it included trysts with lovely ladies, and payments for these liaisons.

If this were a perfect world, another Governor would be written about more. He has written about two women who he was involved with, and what a lovely book it turned out to be. A few days ago I started reading Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala’s book titled My Other Two Daughters. Please click here to read my review of the book.

Punjabi Univeristy, Patiala

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Punjabi University Patiala has always had a very special place in our family’s collective life. Giani Gurdit Singh ji, my father, played a significant role in its creation, Mrs. Inderjit Kaur, my mother became its third Vice-Chancellor, and we grew up on campus while she was Vice-Chancellor.

An invitation from the Department of Journalism to talk to the students about Cyber Journalism: Concept and Scope was a good reason to make the trip to Patiala from Chandigarh. Accompanying me was my brother, Ravinder Singh.

The students of Punjabi University are a bright lot, and thanks to Profs Walia and Mann, we had a healthy interactive session. Lunch was at an old friend’s house. Balraj Singh Ghuman is the grand son of General Raja Gurdit Singh, a legendary Prime Minister of Patiala State.

I also took some photographs of Yadavindra Public School, which was such an important part of our lives as children.

While we were in school, we walked out of this corridor

We were just like these children practicing on the grounds of the school

Guru Gobind Singh Bhavan, which had such stalwarts as Prof Harbans Singh, the editor of Encyclopedia of Sikhism and Dr L M Joshi of the Department of Buddhism, the Vice-Chancellor’s office, where our mother worked….All in all, a fun time and a great trip down memory lane, coupled with a good interaction with active, bright young minds.
